In a ceremony held at the Embassy of Greece in Washington, DC, on September 18, Greece’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alexandra Papadopoulou, officially swore in John Georges as Honorary Consul of Greece in New Orleans, LA. Also, present was Ambassador of Greece to the U.S., Katerina Nasika.
According to a post by the Greek Embassy, New Orleans holds a special place in Greece’s diplomatic history in the United States as in 1866, the first Greek Consulate was established there.
Also, two years earlier, in 1864, Holy Trinity, the first Greek Orthodox parish in the U.S. was founded in this Louisiana city on the Mississippi River.
Notably, the Greek Consulate in New Orleans was also the first overseas posting for Deputy Foreign Minister Papadopoulou.
As highlighted in the Embassy’s statement, John Georges is a prominent Greek American businessman, extremely active in the Greek American community and deeply committed in the promotion of Greek American relations.
