NEW YORK, NY- New York Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin surrendered to federal authorities Tuesday morning after being indicted on bribery charges.
Prosecutors says Benjamin faces bribery and additional charges for allegedly trying to get campaign contribution in exchange for a state grant.
Benjamin was questioned earlier this year by the feds amid a reported probe into whether he was involved in an alleged plot to illegally funnel contributions to his failed campaign for city comptroller.
Benjamin was appointed lieutenant governor by Gov. Kathy Hochul in 2021, shortly after losing a primary bid for New York City comptroller. He previously served as the New York State Senator for District 30, which is comprised of Harlem, East Harlem (El Barrio), Upper West Side, Washington Heights, Hamilton Heights and Morningside Heights.
More details are expected to be released at a news conference by the Southern District of New York later Tuesday.
