Nisyrians of New York Bring Easter Joy to Hundreds of Families in Greece

Over 400 families in Greece were able to celebrate Easter with dignity and joy thanks to the latest food and essentials distribution organized by the Hellenic Relief Foundation, with the support of the Nisyrian Society of New York and the broader Greek-American community.

The initiative was led by Mr. Dimitris Xanthos, President of the Nisyrian Society of New York, who mobilized members of the organization to raise the necessary funds. Their efforts were generously reinforced by a major contribution from Mr. Kostas Zachariadis, a steadfast supporter of the Foundation’s work. Thanks to their contributions, families received not only staple food items but also Easter gifts for children, including chocolate eggs and traditional tsourekia.

This year’s distribution was also made possible thanks to the vital support of local AHEPA chapters from New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, as well as numerous Greek Orthodox parishes through their Ladies Philoptochos Societies, all of whom contributed generously to the effort through donations.

The distribution took place on Wednesday, April 15, with the assistance of ELETHSY volunteers, led by Maria Siourdi. Also present and actively involved were Antonia Pantouvaki, Soula Belli, Rania Makridi, Charitini Livanou, Emy Spanou, and honorary ELETHSY president Saki Kypraiou. These dedicated volunteers ensured the smooth operation of the event and offered personal attention and care to each beneficiary.

The event was further supported by donations from: Nikos Konstantopoulos Group, AGROVIM, Friesland Campina, Karamalekos, ARISTON Butter, Astiko, My Market, the Food Bank, Tottis Quality, Makridis EPE, Loulis Mills, Barba Stathis, and the Athens Society.

A particularly moving moment was the presence of Mr. Kostas Zachariadis, who traveled from New York to personally attend the distribution, speak with families, and reaffirm the pressing needs they face. Mr. Zachariadis has emerged as a guardian angel of the Hellenic Relief Foundation’s philanthropic mission.

As the organization notes, securing resources for monthly distributions is becoming increasingly difficult, but the solidarity of the Greek-American community and the compassion of donors in Greece remain a powerful driving force behind this vital work.
