The Nisyros Geopark was officially included to the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network during the most recent session of the international organization on September 9 in Chile.
The candidacy application was submitted in November 2021 with scientific support from collaborators at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Professors Paraskevi Nomikou and Panagiotis Nastos) and the International Hellenic University (Professor Dimitrios Emmanouloudis). Supplementary information was submitted in January 2025 for final evaluation.
“Nisyros celebrates a historic moment”, Mayor Christofis Koroneos said, announcing the news, noting that “this significant achievement is the result of years of hard work, dialogue, and collaboration, it officially recognizes the island’s unique geological, cultural, and environmental value and also highlights the island’s potential for geotourism and sustainable development in a remote region of Europe”.

“This international recognition marks a milestone for our island, highlighting not only its unique natural and cultural wealth, but also the significance of the surrounding islets of Pergousa, Pachia, Kondeliousa, and Strongyli, as well as the marine area between them, which form an integral part of the Geopark. Together they compose a rare geological mosaic, unique in the world, opening the way for further protection and promotion of the site”, Mayor Koroneos stressed.
He continued saying that “it is an opportunity to ensure that the island’s natural beauty and geological heritage remain intact, while creating sustainable development prospects for the local community. It is also a great responsibility, confirming the need for strict and comprehensive conservation strategies for the natural environment, geological formations, and cultural richness of Nisyros”. he continueddded.
“The Nisyros Geopark is a living laboratory of natural processes, with unique geological formations and landscapes shaped by volcanic activity. Protecting these natural resources is vital—not only for preserving heritage but also for securing a sustainable future for generations to come”, the Mayor added.
