New York City Mayor Eric Adams hosted the annual Greek Heritage reception celebrating Greek Independence Day and the Greek-American community on March 20 at the Gracie Mansion in NYC.
Attending the event were His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, Consul General of Greece in New York, Iphigenia Kanara, Consul Petros Dorizas, as well as members of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York and the Parade Committee.

This year’s citations were presented to Margo Catsimatidis, Archon Demetrius Kalamaras and His Grace Bishop Nektarios of Diokleia, Chancellor of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, for their contributions to the Greek American community and the city of New York, in general.
“Today, we join hands with you to make of our city a better place for all its citizens, and we thank you for honoring these three exceptional individuals”, said His Eminence, who gave the invocation, adding that “In honoring them, you honor every Greek of New York, a proud community that is integral to the shape of this greatest of Cities”.

On his part, Mayor Adams said: “We’ve walked side by side many times, not only at the parade but on other crucial issues and I thank all of you. This community has been extremely supportive throughout the years. From my days as Brooklyn borough president, state senator, and now here as the mayor of the City of New York, the Athens of America, New York City”.
“Your presence and the Greek presence in this city are so significant across our whole city, from Bay Ridge to Brooklyn to Astoria and Manhattan,” the mayor noted adding that “Greek-Americans and Greek New Yorkers have been shaping our city since 1844 and nothing personifies that more to me than the presence of our Greek law enforcement officers,” Adams said.
