ALBANY, NY –
New York State Assemblyman Michael Tannousis (R,C Staten Island/Brooklyn) released a statement on March 20 on the New York Court of Appeals ruling affirming that the right to vote in New York State elections is constitutionally reserved for U.S. citizens, striking Local Law 11 that would grant nearly 800,000 noncitizens the right to vote.
“As the son of immigrants who diligently pursued the American dream, I find it imperative to uphold the righteousness of our electoral process,” said Assemblyman Tannousis, adding that “granting voting rights to noncitizens within a mere 30 days of residency undermines this principle”.
“Our democracy is built on the foundation that voting is a privilege of citizenship, and any deviation from this erodes public trust. I am proud to have been part of the fight in this lawsuit and commend the Court of Appeals for its unwavering commitment to upholding our constitution and giving U.S. citizens faith in our elections”, Tannousis stressed.
Assemblyman Michael Tannousis represents the 64th Assembly District, which includes parts of Southern Brooklyn and the East Shore of Staten Island.
