NEW YORK (ANA-G. Garantzioti) –
The United Nations Security Council met under the presidency of Greece on the situation in Yemen.
The Greek Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, stressed that a growing number of women in Yemen are deprived of even fundamental freedoms and human rights and called for full respect for international humanitarian law.
He strongly condemned the continued illegal and unjustified detention of diplomatic, UN and NGO personnel and humanitarian workers by the Houthis, including women humanitarian workers, journalists and human rights defenders, and expressed his full support for the UN Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, and his efforts to revive the peace dialogue in Yemen.
He stressed that Greece remains committed to ensuring maritime security and freedom of navigation, including through the EU naval operation ASPIDES in the Red Sea.
