WASHINGTON (ANA-MPA/P. Kasfikis) –
US President Donald Trump described Greek-American relations as “stronger than ever” during the ceremony to present the credentials of the new Greek ambassador to the United States, Antonis Alexandridis.
During his official address, the US president stated that the friendship between Greece and the United States is “strong, historic and based on a shared democratic and intellectual heritage,” noting that he looks forward to further strengthening bilateral relations.
Trump referred to Greece’s progress towards achieving NATO’s goal of spending 5% of GDP on defence, noting that Athens demonstrates “real leadership” within the Alliance. “Peace is secured through strength,” he emphasised.
In the energy sector, he made special reference to the exports of American liquefied natural gas and the so-called Vertical Corridor, estimating that the relevant infrastructure projects will enhance the energy security of the wider region.
At the same time, he expressed his appreciation for the courage that, as he said, Greece showed by choosing to abstain during the adoption, by the International Maritime Organisation, of the net zero emissions framework. In this context, he spoke of a regulation that would burden consumers, businesses and global trade.
Finally, he referred to the prospects for strengthening cooperation in the shipbuilding industry, including talks on the construction of US frigates in Greece, as well as the expansion of bilateral relations in the areas of trade and investment.
