The Hippocratic Cancer Research Foundation (HCRF) will host its annual Wings to Cure Gala this Saturday, November 22, bringing together community leaders, philanthropists, and medical pioneers for an evening dedicated to advancing the fight against cancer.
This year’s gala will honor the groundbreaking work of Dr. Leonidas Platanias and his team at Northwestern University’s Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center. Their research continues to push the boundaries of cancer treatment, offering hope to patients and families worldwide.
Organizers describe the event as more than a fundraiser — a call to action: “As we gather to honor the lives touched by cancer, we unite with a shared purpose: to fund innovative, think‑outside‑the‑box research that brings hope to countless patients, families, and communities worldwide”.
“Our foundation serves not only as a beacon of hope but also as a leader in cancer breakthroughs, embodying the legacy of Hippocrates, the father of medicine. This legacy reflects our commitment to healing, compassion, and the principles that guide our mission”, says HCRF Chairwoman Eleni Bousis, (pictured with Dr. Platanias) in a message on the Foundation’s website.
The evening will be chaired by WGN‑TV medical reporter Dina Bair and news reporter Mike Lowe, with NBC Chicago anchor Alex Maragos and WGN‑TV’s Micah Materre serving as Masters of Ceremonies.
Funds raised will directly support the Lurie Cancer Center’s efforts to develop novel treatments and explore scientific frontiers often overlooked by traditional funding. “Every dollar raised represents more than just research — it represents hope,” said Bair, a long-time advocate for cancer awareness and a cancer survivor herself. “The work being done here has the power to change lives, not just in Chicago, but around the world.”
Guests can expect an inspiring evening featuring personal stories, live entertainment, and opportunities to contribute to the foundation’s mission. The gala, renowned for its elegance and emotional resonance, has become one of Chicago’s premier philanthropic events in the fight against cancer.
The Hippocratic Cancer Research Foundation was founded by five friends over lunch in the fall of 2013: the late Jay Michael, Danielle Samolovich, Annasophia Loumis, Nicole Eliadis-Boufis, and Eleni Bousis. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, HCRF has raised, since its inception, millions of dollars for research to identify cellular pathways that affect all cancers, develop novel treatments for hematological malignancies, and launch innovative trials for all types of cancers, among other related efforts.
