Annual Greek Education Conference, Nov. 5

NEW YORK, NY –

The Department of Greek Education with the collaboration of the High Council for Greek Education are hosting their annual Greek Education conference -in the presence of Archbishop Elpidophoros- on Tuesday, November 5th, from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM EST at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox community [11-05 150th Street, Whitestone, NY 11357].

The workshop, a staple of professional development, aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of educators from both Day and Afternoon schools, including those involved in English and Greek programs. A key feature of the event will be a presentation by educator Angeliki Mastrochimahalaki who will focus on promoting literacy and share effective strategies for teaching the Greek language and culture. Her experience and insights promise to inspire educators and help them engage their students more effectively.

Born on the island of Chios and currently residing in Athens, Angeliki Mastrochimahalaki holds a Doctorate in Philosophy from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens. With a career in Primary Education spanning from 1985 to 2021, she has served as a Greek Elementary School Director. Since 2021, she has been the Academic Director at Ellinopoula.com, an online platform for learning the Greek language.

An active member of the Greek Children’s Book Circle (IBBY) and the Women’s Literature Group, she has published 12 children’s books and contributed to 16 collective volumes. Among her notable works is the book Οι Ρίζες µου, which explores cultural themes and is available in both Greek and English. Her work focuses on promoting literacy, innovative teaching methods, and the role of children’s literature in education. She frequently engages with readers through school meetings and book festivals across Greece and Europe.

She writes a column, “BOOK JOURNEYS”, about children’s and adolescent literature. She has been involved in various educational initiatives, including promoting reading among students. She is also a member of the Special Synodic Council of Cultural Identity of the Church of Greece.
