Consulate General of Greece in Chicago Honors Greek Independence Day

Consul General of Greece in Chicago, Emmanuel Koubarakis, and Consul Georgia Tasiopoulou hosted the annual reception in honor of the 202nd anniversary of the Greek Independence ahead of the Windy City’s annual Hellenic Heritage Parade which was held on March 26.  

In attendance were H.E. Metropolitan Nathanael of Chicago, Secretary of State, Alexi Giannoulias, Cook County Treasurer, Maria Pappas, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) Commissioner Mariyana Spyropoulos and members of the Greek Community, among them Chicago Mayor Candidate Paul Vallas.

This year’s Parade in Chicago honored the memory of Air Force Lt Marios -Michail Touroutsikas -in presence of his family- [photo] who lost his life during a training flight with a Phantom F-4 fighter aircraft last February, as well as Greece’s EMAK [Catastrophe Response Special Unit].

The Chicago Parade is organized by the Federation of Hellenic Organizations of Illinois, ENOSIS. This year’s Grand Marshal was U.S. Ambassador to Greece, George Tsunis.
