The Greek state budget recorded a primary surplus of 2.122 billion euros in January, up from a budget target for a surplus of 1.118 billion euros, but down from a primary surplus of 2.773 billion euros in the corresponding month last year, the finance ministry said in a report released on Thursday.
More specifically, in an amended cash basis, the state budget balance recorded a surplus of 933 million euros from a budget target for a deficit of 82 million and a surplus of 1.480 billion euros in January 2023. The primary result showed a surplus of 2.122 billion euros, reflecting proceeds from the Recovery and Resilience Fund and delayed tax receipts.
Net revenue was 6.549 billion euros in January, up 825 million from targets, reflecting higher tax revenues, higher Public Investment Programme revenues and higher receipts from RRF. Tax revenues totaled 5.654 billion euros, up 8.9% from targets. Tax returns came to 501 million euros, up 62 million from targets, while Public Investment Programme revenues were 925 million euros, up 211 million from targets.
State budget spending was 5.616 billion euros in January, down 190 million from targets, but down by 70 million compared with January 2023. Regular budget spending was down 403 million from targets. Public Investment Programme spending was 948 million euros, up 213 million from targets.
