Greeks Schools in New Jersey Begin with Blessing

TENAFLY, NJ –

His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey presided over the agiasmos service at the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. John the Theologian in Tenafly, NJ on September 9, to bless the Greek School students as they began the 2025-2026 academic year.

His Eminence was welcomed by the Cathedral Dean Fr. Panagiotis Lekkas and the students of the Greek school, along with their teachers and principal.

“The Greek language is a global treasure. It is our great national capital, our identity, the legacy of humanity and the bridge that unites the Greeks of the Diaspora with their homeland”, stressed the Metropolitan.

The St. Thomas Hellenic School began the 2025-2026 academic year on September 8. The parish’s new proistamenos Fr. Georgios Oikonomou presided over the Agiasmo blessing and welcomed the staff, students, and their families. He offered his best wishes for a successful school year, stressing the significance of maintaining our Greek language. The school has over 100 students enrolled, including an unprecedented number of 22 Kindergarten students.

“The increase in students and staff in the school demonstrates the love for the Hellenic language and culture in the community,” Principal Margarita Vrettos said.
