Nisyrian Society of New York Celebrated 120th Anniversary

NEW YORK, NY – GNUSAby Revekka Papadopoulos

The Nisyrian Society of New York marked a major milestone on May 11, celebrating its 120th anniversary with a vibrant gathering at the Hilton Long Island/Huntington in Melville, NY. The event drew nearly 600 Nisyrians and friends, united in honoring the legacy of the Society and the leaders who shaped its journey.

The celebration paid tribute to the past presidents of the three original Nisyrian organizations in New York, whose vision and leadership led to their unification—a pivotal moment that strengthened efforts to preserve and promote the culture and heritage of the island of Nisyros.

A highlight of the evening was the recognition of Maestro George Hatzinikolaou, a Nisyrian-born violinist renowned for his extraordinary talent and authentic interpretation of traditional Nisyrian music. With hundreds of performances across the United States and Greece, Hatzinikolaou has become a cultural ambassador, breathing life into the island’s musical traditions and inspiring generations through his artistry.

“As we reflect on our 120 -year history and feel the spirit of those no longer with us, we honor all our previous Presidents. We thank them for their dedication, hard work and commitment to preserve the Nisyrian culture and support our beloved island”, said the Nisyrian Society President Stavros Plangetis, welcoming the attendees. He also acknowledged the support of the organizing committee, including Nicholas Papamichael, Chairman of the event, and Pauline Roditis, Chairlady of the Journal Committee.

Archbishop Elpidophoros, who joined the celebration, shared that the day marked the fifth anniversary of his election to the archepiscopal throne of America, and expressed his deep appreciation for the Nisyrian community, stating that the Omogeneia is infinitely richer because of their presence and contributions.

“Your contributions to the life of the Omogeneia – especially in New York – have many and varied blessings. You have exceptional families that offer leadership throughout the Church and broader society”, His Eminence said, commending also their “loyalty and devotion” to their homeland.

“You have done a great service to your Island and your history by bonding together, and manifesting your integrity and your unity on behalf of your wonderful Island. You honor those who came before you, and you honor those yet to be born; for they will be born into a community of living and lively memory”, he added.

The evening concluded with a spirited dance performance by the youth dance group and traditional music performed by Maestro George Hatzinikolaou.
