NEW YORK, NY –
In an impressive turn of events, the Director of the Department of Greek Education, Dr. Anastasios Koularmanis, had to take the unexpected step of closing registration for the department’s new online Greek language program. This decision came after just a few weeks of enrollment, owing to an unexpectedly large number of applicants.
To date, the department has received applications from over 250 individuals, all eager to embark on their journey of learning the Greek language through the adult online course. This astonishing level of interest clearly illustrates a robust and fervent desire to connect with this rich and storied language.
The applicants come from a diverse array of backgrounds, each motivated by their unique reasons. Some are driven by a longing to connect with family members in Greece, seeking a deeper bond through language. Others are inspired by a desire to enhance their ability to travel and immerse themselves in the beauty of Greek culture. Many share a profound affection for the Greek language, and a significant portion express a sense of regret for not having learned it earlier in life.
A heartwarming aspect of this program’s success is the sight of entire families enrolling together. Husbands and wives, parents and adult children – they all share the common goal of embracing the Greek language and culture.
Dr. Anastasios Koularmanis, the Director, aptly summarizes the significance of language learning by quoting philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein: “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.” This profound statement underscores the deep connection between language and our understanding of the world. By learning the Greek language, participants are not only gaining linguistic skills but also opening doors to new avenues of communication, culture, and knowledge. This expansion of horizons enriches lives in countless ways.
The department’s collaboration with the Academy of Science and Letters of Pontians has proven to be exceptionally fruitful.
As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, initiatives like these bridge geographical boundaries and provide individuals with the tools to engage with diverse cultures, fostering mutual understanding and appreciation. Enrolling in these classes not only equips individuals with linguistic skills but also empowers them to be ambassadors of cultural exchange in an ever-evolving global landscape.
The overwhelming response to this online program indicates its importance and impact, transcending mere linguistic acquisition to become a catalyst for personal and professional growth. The success of this initiative serves as a strong foundation for future endeavors, and the department eagerly anticipates building upon this triumph.
The program is scheduled to commence in mid-October and conclude in May. Classes are set to take place on Saturdays from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM Eastern Standard Time (EST).
